My name is Cristian Chihaia, i've been working as an Art Director in the television industry for more than 3 years and as a freelance concept artist for well over 5 years now. I'll try to offer an industry point of view to all this fanart drama thing i see going on in here.
As a freelance artist you will many times face projects you might dislike. However, bills and real life issues come in balance so many times you're forced to take them. I personally have painted things i might not be happy or proud of but those do not shame me as an artist in any way. Heck, i've even done comics for the gay community because yes, i do have a rent to pay.
Many of the people pointing a finger at you are within the 16-17 years old range. The do not face issues nor do they understand the various stages an artist goes through in his personal development. These people's opinions are NOT to be considerated by you, for your own sake.
Example - if Frank Frazetta made a porno comic today, i'd be waiting in a line for hours getting it by now and i'd be typing this from my phone. If one respects an artist [one with a judgement module], one does not stone that artist for x, y or z product.
Regarding fanart - Fanart is a theme that many blame. I myself haven't really done any only because well, i don't like that many things. If i would, my gallery would be full of it. And i do plan to. Fanart means you like a topic and you paint it. So where's the drama?
I've pressed that watch button some time ago and it stays pressed. If you start listening to what foul-mouths say, it will only hurt your artistic endeavors. If my favorite artists would decide to paint ponies all of a sudden then damn - those would be the best damn ponies ever painted haha.

1. whatever you love painting
2. whatever makes you stronger as an artist and makes you learn something new.
Your viewers filter themselves. People that admire what you do and how you do it will stay here regardless of the themes you work on.
p.s. : here's a harsh truth about working in this industry:
You will Never please Everyone. Ever. Nor should you try to.
