Who cares if you draw fanart or not? Your knowledge about anatomic and facial structure is AMAZING. Also, making a reallistic drawing out of a comic character and getting it still looking like her/him takes talent!. You're one of the best artists i've ever seen on dA, you know a LOT(and you know you know it ;)). so ignore them and please keep on painting, I melt everytime I see a painting of yours!

Hey Sakimichan,

I really hope you take your time to read this:

My name is Cristian Chihaia, i've been working as an Art Director in the television industry for more than 3 years and as a freelance concept artist for well over 5 years now. I'll try to offer an industry point of view to all this fanart drama thing i see going on in here.

As a freelance artist you will many times face projects you might dislike. However, bills and real life issues come in balance so many times you're forced to take them. I personally have painted things i might not be happy or proud of but those do not shame me as an artist in any way. Heck, i've even done comics for the gay community because yes, i do have a rent to pay.

Many of the people pointing a finger at you are within the 16-17 years old range. The do not face issues nor do they understand the various stages an artist goes through in his personal development. These people's opinions are NOT to be considerated by you, for your own sake.

Example - if Frank Frazetta made a porno comic today, i'd be waiting in a line for hours getting it by now and i'd be typing this from my phone. If one respects an artist [one with a judgement module], one does not stone that artist for x, y or z product.

Regarding fanart - Fanart is a theme that many blame. I myself haven't really done any only because well, i don't like that many things. If i would, my gallery would be full of it. And i do plan to. Fanart means you like a topic and you paint it. So where's the drama?

I've pressed that watch button some time ago and it stays pressed. If you start listening to what foul-mouths say, it will only hurt your artistic endeavors. If my favorite artists would decide to paint ponies all of a sudden then damn - those would be the best damn ponies ever painted haha.
_
Please just paint:
1. whatever you love painting
2. whatever makes you stronger as an artist and makes you learn something new.

Your viewers filter themselves. People that admire what you do and how you do it will stay here regardless of the themes you work on.

p.s. : here's a harsh truth about working in this industry:
You will Never please Everyone. Ever. Nor should you try to.

Hope this helps,
Cristian

I agree with the comments before mine (: you are an incredible artist and you have a gift that not only makes you happy but other people happy too and if you want to draw fanart, then like every other artist out there, you should be entitled to do so. I adore your drawing of Howl as it's a character I love and I like to see other people's representations of characters I care about. The person who sent you that message and unwatched you is not important, your happiness however is and you should never let one person stand it the way of what you want to do. ^_^

I love your fanart and your original art, and I think you should be able to draw whatever you feel like~ Your fanart is good because you add original style to it, and I love seeing my favorite characters drawn in different styles, but I also love seeing your ideas, so I think it's silly someone would stop watching you for that. It's sad that you feel you have to apologize because you don't! Remember that making art is what makes you happy (my impression at least) and thus it shouldn't matter if you want to do fanart or original art. I think you can improve your skills no matter what you are making. And you shouldn't have to feel like you're letting anyone down either.. because in the end, what matters is if you have let yourself down! I know it's been said before but it seems that you need to hear it more; Do what you want to do! Not what you feel you should be doing! Otherwise you'll never make yourself happy ;__; Plus, it's obvious to me that your love for games and such led you to wanting to improve your skills! So go on and do what you want to do! I'll keep watching you regardless :)

If it makes you happy to draw fan art then do so, artist evolve and goes true periods in their artisitc life where they sometime goes from fan art to origianal and reverse, There is nothing to worry about. And Yes, you are reading to much into it. So what if you lost a watcher, Are you here for them? You will gain a louse watchers all the time. But as long as you do what makes you feel okay then it dossn't matter what you draw.

Like everyone else said, you should be free to draw whatever you want. What's wrong with fanart? People long ago drew scenes of greek legends or the Bible. Those works are considered classics. Yet somehow groups of people take offense when people draw scenes inspired by stories of the current age for their personal enjoyment. Art is a bit like conversation: sometimes you just want to talk about your favourite shows or books rather than have to come up with your own stories all the time.

congrats to the jerk that overreacted and made you feel and think this way

artists have every right to draw what they want to, what they enjoy, and what inspires them.
so you wanted to draw some of your favorite characters, that's totally normal. i'm pretty sure most artists, hobbiests and professionals alike, draw fanart to some degree. it's only natural to be inspired by these characters and to have the desire to render them in your own style, to capture them in your own light.
personally, i've enjoyed the fanarts, but in the end all that matters is that YOU enjoyed them.

you shouldn't draw for anyone but yourself, and don't let others influence that and restrict you from doing what you want to do. art shouldn't be about pleasing other people. sure, it's a supplementary benefit, something that makes you and the viewers of your art feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and it's a nice gesture, but it should never be the main reason for the creation of art. even when it's as a gift or for a job, if you aren't drawing what you want, then what does it even mean anymore?

i'm sure that when you started out as an artist, you weren't thinking 'oboy, i'm going to bend myself to everyone else's expectations!'
you probably did it simply because you love it. and why should that change? why should you stop drawing for yourself and for that pure love of art? why should your art be dictated by the whims of the masses, or even worse, a single individual?
the answer is that it doesn't need to, you don't have to, and it shouldn't.

and as if it were a cry for attention, a ploy to get more watchers.
that's such an ignorant thing to say. in my opinion, this person is prob some sock it to the man wannabe hipster who just got their panties all in a bunch because you were drawing 'mainstream', which is just a ridiculous mindset to have. they should appreciate your art for what it is, not what it contains. they want to unwatch you for something so petty, fine, go ahead, you'll be better off without any connection to someone so close minded

bottom line is
DON'T APOLOGIZE
there's no reason for it at all
you don't have to answer to or explain yourself to anyone

YOU draw what YOU want and what makes YOU happy
YOU are the artist

my suggestion for the next person who sends you a note of such an outrageous nature, is that you politely and kindly tell them where they can go and what they can do with their senseless complaints

God, only a moron would think so lowly of you.
Fanart or not, I'll always watch you.
I watch you because of the beauty you capture in an image.
It moves me.
Regardless of it being a character of someone else's, you capture it in your own unique, special way.

Merely a faithful watcher.

You know in some ways, if you change your perspective, most art is a fan art of something, even if its your own ideas. For instance, I have a piece that I painted that's a scene of a sunset, couldn't that in itself be considered fan art of nature? For the sunset was already there in the sky and I was awestruck by it. Yes I changed it to my own style, but nature was the original artist. Even some of the most well known painters, such as Leonardo, painted figures from literature, but they are still hailed as masters. Just do what you love and feel is best, art is art, no matter the subject or medium. Everyone has their own tastes, you can't please everyone. What matters is you do whats best for you because at the end of the day, that's what matters most :).

The subject doesn't matter as much as how much love you put into it. I'm watching you for you and your style, not what you're putting out. I'm appalled that someone was arrogant enough to send you such a message.

Sakimi I really enjoy your fanart works as much as all your other pieces. Simply because they are not original characters does not mean the art in itself isn't stunning and a complete privilege to view. For example ... I adored your recent pic of Dante and Howl since I love both characters.

Please do not allow someone else to influence what you feel inspired to draw. Art should be fun!!! And aside from that it is YOUR art, you can draw whatever you want, and if someone can't appreciate a few gorgeous paintings of characters that already exist then it is their loss.

You don't need anyone's permission to have fun.

You should do art the way you want - fan art or original. If it makes you happy, do it. Art is supposed to be relaxing, so if fan art is what does it for you, by all means become a fan art artist. If you want to do original, do that - switch between the two - your other fans and I don't mind. Your art is awesome! and you shouldn't have to apologize because you want to do it your way.

I personally like what you do (hence why I pressed the watch button). You can't take what ONE watcher says so personally - there are going to be haters no matter what you do. Be proud of what you do because you are an amazing artist!

Hope this lifts you spirits,

Oh man! You are too nice a person. I think you shouldn't have to apologize to people for doing what you like. Fan arts have their own good points. It tells me, the viewer, what you are interested in. It is your freedom of choice to post whatever you like, and as your fan, I will appreciate whatever you post. ♥ Art is a form of expression, and so you shouldn't limit it to what your fans like to see. Draw whatever you want to draw. Don't let people's expectations and pressure restrict your art. I will always be cheering you on! =]

well.. I see this thing is already quite discussed but I will add my own opinion ^_^
I will just give you a simple advice! Everytime you do something (art, actions, speech) and show it to the public there will be lot of people that love it, like it, feels neutral, don't like it or hate it!You, as an artist, have a number of people that really appreciate your art and everytime you'll change anything you'll loose some people and acquire others!

Everytime you got a critics is right to listen to it and think about it but then the most important thing is that art comes from inside you, and you will always give your best just by following your feelings! So if the angry person is not the one who commissioned you that work (in that case you'd probably listen to it XD) just feel free to choose your path!

And, most of all, I think that just by stop watching an artist is not the best way of doing a critique.

Pretty much everyone with a level head here will agree on this point, you don't have to apologize.

You worked hard to get at your level, and you decide what you do with your hands. It's your skill, its your gallery. Art is an expression of one's being. If you want to render your favourite characters, you have the right to, and no one else can dictate otherwise. Just remember that.

That note you received was a display of arrogance, if anything. No one can tell you what you can and cannot draw. If they didn't like what you posted recently, they should have just unwatched you and moved on, like any mature, level headed individual should. I've unwatched people before for various reasons, but it's not up to me to tell them what they can and cannot do with their skills and gallery, even if I disagree.

I might not be able to do much in terms of creativity, but for god's sake, I know my place. Artists do what they do because it's in their blood, they need to. If someone tries to manipulate you into not doing something that you want to do with your skills, you can tell them that they don't have the right to tell you what you can and cannot create.

In other words, you can tell them to fuck off and learn their place instead of trying to make you feel bad for something you have the right to do.

That's about it. Don't worry about it. If doing fanart is your way to relax, then do it and don't let the naysayers get in your way. It's your hands, your work, your skills, your talent, not theirs, even if they want to pretend it is.

Even if it was to get more page views, they have no right to act that way to you. It's your business! starving artists gotta eat somehow, and if that's a way to put yourself forward and hopefully get more commissions, by all means. Your art is beautiful and amazing, whether original or fanart. Granted, I love your original stuff, but the fanart is amazing too!

I feel the same way as you on fanart- I haven't done much because I feel I'm not good enough to do them justice yet.

Don't get upset just because one person doesn't like what you're doing. If you like doing it, do it. Don't stop doing a certain kind of art because one person thinks you're becoming a conformist.

Personally, I enjoy seeing fanart in your art style, so I would be remiss if you stopped entirely. But again, that's your prerogative. Art has never been about giving the people what they want, it's been about feeling. If you feel like doing fanart- do fanart. If you feel like doing original works, then do so.

Don't let one bitter viewer force you to do stuff you don't want, because then it's not art anymore. It's a job.

Doing something because it's fun and gives a bit of a reprieve from the usual is not something you should have to apologize for. If it makes you happy and helps you to appreciate the work that goes into the originals more than by all means, do more fanart in addition to the original work. At least you are still working on better yourself, i.e. getting the kinks out while thinking of new material. It helps you think and keeps you from getting rusty.
You shouldn't have to apologize to anybody for doing something you enjoy.
That person who said that to you, or anybody who says that to you is, pardon my language, an asshole.

I love your art because of the creativity, beauty, and the work you put into it...not just the subject being portrayed.

Don't let anyone dictate to you what you can and cannot do.

I love your fan/art to pieces because I love your art and your style and your skill, and I don't believe for a second that you'd try to get more pageviews with fan art. There's something to be said for being able to draw someone else's ideas, to visualize and execute someone else's creations. And even if there wasn't, your calibur of artistic skill is like, off the scales. I can understand why getting a note like that would really really get you down, but the rest of your watchers are here to confirm the idea is lunacy and you are an awesome artist no matter what you draw. :aww:

Oh no, please, don't feel like that, because that isn't something good, you shouldn't let a comment like that to get to you just the way it did, I know you must feel terrible, specially since a comment like that got to you, but you shouldn't stop doing what you want or like, because you know, if those fan arts makes you feel good, most of us feel good.

Also I know that you must be feeling just great doing your original drawings, which I must say, I fell in love with all of them, but you're free to draw whatever you want, I feel comfortable with both of them, seriously! And when I see any drawing of yours, without sounding like a waaay to crazy stalker or something like that, I must admit, I feel very happy and relaxed somehow.

Just keep up with all of your drawings, we, who truly follow you because we believe that you're awesome, no matter what, are very happy and will be very happy to keep on seeing all of your creations, just don't let comments like that get to you and keep your head held high! Also, never apologize for what you do, be proud of them, no matter if someone likes it or no, don't let them get on your way!

Even IF you were doing it for the attention...it's perfectly understandable. Artists nowadays have to look for a way into the commercial world. I used to avoid fanart as well, but now I've done some fanart lately and you're right, the attention is nice, and that way you get more exposure and more chances to make a living out of the things you love. It may take a while before you can catch people's attention with your original stuff (even though you're really so good it doesn't matter much), so before you do you gotta do SOMETHING to keep afloat.

You shouldn't have to apologize for something stupid like this. Personally, I love seeing my favorite artists render anime and game characters, because it always brings a new flavor to the table. The way you draw them is usually how you perceive them as a whole, so it isn't shameful at all. (I skip that part because, hey, I'm a writer and I screw with personalities all the time anyway). Original art is amazing. It's fabulous! But I should think that anyone who has ever fangirled over anything should understand the love we put into fanart.

Don't let stupid comments like this get you down, because you're much better than that. It doesn't matter who or what you're drawing--everything that goes on that page is you!

honestly, you've got no reason to apologize. as an artist, what ever creative vision (i hate the term "creative vision" but it gets my point across. :/ ) you want to portray, you get to portray. no one can ever tell you what you should or shouldn't make. and anyone who thinks they have that authority, is far too self-involved to matter. no worries. you're very talented.

You should never have to explain yourself for the artwork you do.
If they choose to not watch you anymore because a little influx of fanart, it's their choice, and it's their loss.

Just keep on doing. :3
