Site Update: More Like This on Deviations

For those of you who are in beta, you probably know what I'm referring to, if you don't, please be informed here:…

Before I start talking about this new feature, here are the pro and con for this feature.

1.enables sharing, discover more from different artist and from the same artist
2.Help promote your artworks when displayed, help promote other artist

1.Distracting from the  deviation that you are viewing
2.Displays non related deviation or not up to standard deviation
3.Some deviants find it like ads. They want to be able to pick who they want to have featured with their deviation.
4.Takes longer to load

After considering all these pros and cons, honestly, I think this feature has potential. Deviantart is going in a good direction although they might not be implementing it the right way. Deviantart is about community of artists, their works , discovery and sharing which I think is what this feature is trying to do. But here's the problem, I agree with a lot of you who are saying that its distracting from the original deviation that you are trying to view. on that note, it is the esthetics that needs to be improved. like many of you suggested This feature could be better if:

1.Making it less distracting by having it as a link that you can click on to bring you to the "More like this page. or have it as a drop down or collapsible window that is hidden unless clicked on. Or have it moved down or somewhere that wont compete with the deviation you are viewing.)
2.improve on what is shown in the more like this section (more relevant deviation) If we have some option on what we can see there that would be awesome.
3.Make it optional, deviants can turn the feature on or off.

understand that Deviantart is trying a new thing and usually that means they are risking a lot of time and money to try to make it better. They will eventually make it better : )

Let me know what you guys think, and if I forgot to mention an pros and cons.

:iconiplz: find it immensely annoying but feel that it would work much better as a 'Drop Down Menu' feature, as it is a very good idea. People should always be given a choice of what they want from the menu not from the creators.
Ruisufueripe Featured By Owner Jan 30, 2013  Student Digital Artist
For me it's doing fine, i'm not having that problem of distraction, and one thing i find cool, is that the drawings displayed are from the artist i'm seeing and other artists with same style.
I don't have that much expirience to have that lot of points, but i think it's gonna be a great app like you said.
NaJHaikezeH Featured By Owner Jan 26, 2013  Hobbyist
They should put that section on the right side of the comments, because the people who read the comments usually want more. Then give it to them.
Zumea Featured By Owner Jan 22, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I agree, it is distracting, a drop down menue would be better
MooreCreativity Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2013
I agree with everyone else. I like this feature a lot, but not only is it distracting to the original deviation I think it makes it less likely for me to continue on that deviant's gallery like I used to do, because the More Like this is above the area to View Gallery.
MooreCreativity Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2013
I also kind of wish it didn't include the original deviant's work. I'd rather see similar works by other artists, b/c when I really like an artist I'll go to their gallery anyway. So, it is kind of a time waster looking at the same images twice or three times.
Immortal-Myth Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2013
Definitely agree! I love browsing an artist's gallery and that's why I tend not to use More Like This although I'd love to if it actually showed me work I wouldn't have found otherwise.
Meeowy Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
agreed. the potential is there though I dont think it should be next to the original picture thats being looked at. if they just moved it under or something then it would be much appreciated
iceofwolf Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
I like it, but I think it would be better for me if its position was swapped with the deviant's other work. I'm looking at a picture from so-and-so, the first thing I want to see is more pictures by that same deviant. While the "more like this box" does seem to include that deviant's work, it also includes other deviants'.

Just putting the "more like this" box under allll of the information about the deviant and the deviation I'm currently viewing would make it a complete win for me.
TouchedVenus Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I think you have this spot on, and I agree with all the points you have made. I'm crossing my fingers and having hope that deviantART will definitely make some changes, because I do feel this feature has potential if utilized correctly.
i-am-tsukiko Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013  Student General Artist
It would definitely be a lot better if those changes you suggested were implemented.
TheShamelessHussy Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013
I like the "more like this" option at the bottom of deviations and often use it. However, I hate this new arrangement of more like this beside the deviation I'm currently viewing. It's distracting and we should at the least have an opt out option.
PACHARCHAR Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Thank you for this!
joejoeyjoy4 Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Student Writer
Well before when it was in beta it was just a little button below the fav button, and I liked it like that. It's quite distracting the way it is now, but I love having the option to browse related images, I just don't like having it shoved in my face. It makes the 'view gallery' button harder to find too. Plus, dA are cramming in more ads, like that new not-so-sneaky bar at the top, and that's very disappointing to me.

Hello! I agree with both of your pros and cons, but I would like to add a little extra tidbit.

I didn't mind when you could click on the option when you were viewing the deviation in a thumbnail, but NOW it has taken the place of the the person's gallery!! You know, it used to show 4 extra things in that person's gallery. I used that tool a lot, it helped me decide if I wanted to check the deviant our further. But now it is just other people's art. Which brings me to my next point, I don't think it's really fair. The deviant's art is now compared with a lot of other similar things, that the viewer might like better. I feel like it is taking away from them, and as you said, is distracting. But I feel like if someone is looking in my gallery, they will see something much more awesome on the more like this section, and click away from me, forever....gone.... forever.....

So I, at least, don't like it. But your suggestions would make me like it better... but I miss the other things from the person's gallery popping up.

I think it would be OK if it were optional.
Em-S5 Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Student Photographer
To me, More Like This is a community-based ad. It's not like 3rd party ads, but at least they are ads within the community. I like the fact that it advertizes other artists. I just hope that not only the "popular" deviants' work is up there. I agree. It has a lot of potential.
Fabyus Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013
I totally agree with you.

Maybe using the same "drop down box" to show either More from this artist and more like this (from other artists) depending on the button clicked, wuold also optimize space.
Dorothy-T-Rose Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I agree that this widget has potential. I've found it very useful already. However, the placement and size as it stands right now definitely needs work!

With this feature, there are also two more big ad-slots for people who don't have a subscription.
Philco92 Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013
The way it was being displayed before - as just a link to a new page if you did want to look at "More like this" - I think that worked a lot better than displaying a load of thumbnails on the same page. That way, the option is there if we are interested, but is easily ignored otherwise.
kikamonju Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
I'm a bit baffled by the feature being available on journals.
harrellgirl Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
I found it also makes it more difficult when trying to search for stolen art. Your art appears in the More Like This feature, when you search for thieves via google.
TONEKID Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013
Excellent post, I agree with you! Plus I won't send my deviantart to a client, since most of the people that don't know the website ignore that ''more like this'' is not necessary the art of the current artist.

Deviantart is already like a 'pizza' (no graphic design hierarchy) they should simplify it. If they want to update, they should look for Behance Network.
Gabriela-Birchal Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Professional
I like it when I'm using the search option on DA and not so much when I'm viewing an actual deviation. If they implement the collpase thing as you said, the problem would be solved to me =)

I really love your suggestions for improvement!
Lil0Kiseki Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013
i would go for the drop-down-thing. i like to watch deviation that are 'like this'. but i think a link is a bit to much,, cause most of the time i like to take a quick look instead of a extensive search.

i hope you understand what im trying to say.
kuro-shini Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Other Con I found is that it only works when you're NOT LOGGED IN... So if you want to fave something, isn't possible...

I don't know if someone has commented this before, sorry,
D-Anthonie Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
The 'More Like This' feature is an interesting prospect, and I agree, it has potential. As far as seeing it as an ad, it's not static. It loads the set ones it wants to show to you, and unless you click 'See More Deviations', that is all it will do. I agree that it will make it harder to load, and there should be an option (perhaps for Premium Members, because they're special) of how many, if any at all, are shown when viewing a deviation.

Hardcore explorers could set it to a higher number and have many populate at the side, and either move on right from there or determine if it is even worth 'Seeing More' as I have clicked for more and only the first ones are close, the rest are nowhere even comparable. At the same time, others who follow what they want can select none, and the simple text can sit off to the side, lusting for the embrace of a click by the arrow.

As for a distraction, I find it no more distracting than the 'More from (insert artist name here)' section on the side. I DID notice, however, that the 'More Like This' shows more of the artist's work which is a redundancy because of the 'More from' a little further down.
MorganRLewis Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I think I liked it better when it was just the link, but this isn't too bad... when the deviation you're viewing is in full view, the "More Like This" box is bumped down (just like everything else), bringing it more parallel to the comments, so it isn't quite as distracting as it might otherwise be. I'd prefer just the link, but I can live with this.

I agree, though, that the relevance factor needs to be a lot better for it to really be any use. But this is likely to be a data problem, and not an easily solvable one. (Which means I'll probably be ignoring the feature altogether.)
Djedra Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Professional Writer
I've been using it a lot more since it's actually been showing the deviations. But it does seem to have issues - either showing lots of work by the same artist (which I could get by clicking on them anyway) or showing some really, really random things. The other night, I linked my friend to an image of a well-known anime character and apparently she clicked the 'more like this button' and I got a message saying "How is that more like this? There's a sloth. I found a sloth!"
Now, there is not, nor never was, a sloth in this anime.....

I agree with you, I'd like to have it optional too.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts ^ ^
Meggie272 Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
I think it should definitely either be optional or a collapsible drop-down menu.
evolum Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Fully agree. You make some good points about how they can improve it.

Did you post it as feedback on the official feature entry? If not, you probably should :)
starwingcorona Featured By Owner Jan 19, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I agree that it should be collapsible, and likely minimized by default. I'll admit, I've gone on some picture binges with the feature, but when I'm not going for something like that, it's honestly kinda a pain visually.
gekitsu Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i agree with your assessment – it has the potential to make you find out about an artist whos totally in your alley, but didnt know about. that alone is both worth a lot, and also what should be considered one of the natural advantages of having a community. the implementation is in need of fine tuning, though, to straddle the line between useful and obnoxious.

as to the cons you adressed:

1) it being expandable is a no-brainer, really. no matter how much it provides the viewer with useful opportunities, on the individual deviation page, the deviation must reign supreme. period. i do find the second column to the side of the deviation (ad, fav button, more like this, add to cart, share, ...) a suboptimal arrangement as it is, starting all the way at the top. having it start at the height of the deviation description would be far preferable as the default setting.

2) is definitely something to be fixed because it limits usefulness by not providing what it is there for.

3) is something i dont see, to be honest. both how something like that should be reasonably implemented and what should be the reason for any artists deviation page not providing links to potentially interesting other work. yeah, some people will find something they like better. some will click right through (both will likely be limited with more like this being expandable, and collapsed by default). but deviantart as a community needs to cater to both artists AND art viewers. mostly because in the case of a community website, the demographics are likely to have significant overlap. dA is a community site, therefore enabling networking and facilitating connection is basic. for a distraction- and competition-free display of ones art, theres always dAportfolio.

4) its unlikely it wont have any footprint at all, but given than, at large, broadband is a commonly available solution, 2 or 3 extra seconds arent going to kill anyone, especially when loading can happen asymmetrically, and is well-prioritised. i see how this could be aggravating by principle, but a reasonably well-coded implementation shouldnt result in any meaningful, that is usability-limiting, fashion.
Fundz64 Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's not bad- i actually like it
like you mentioned, it's an eye-distraction and so far, i can't seem to find the button to switch it off.

If there was a way where we could limit how many 'more like this' thumbnails we could see on each post and/or make it a smaller thumbnail preview of some sort.

In any case, this has potential and I think dA should concentrate more on this feature more than the 'commission me' widget which causes a lot of ruckus for naught! :)
CallMeDoc Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013
The cons weigh a lot, LOT more. Agree on all of them.
Graffight Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i don't mind it at all honestly...i don't find it distracting in the least bit, and it has been helpful finding new people and more images similar to what i'm looking for. Hopefully it continues to improve.
Seiia Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I completely agree. I would say more, but there isn't anything that I feel needs to be added.
IAmDeprivedOfSleep Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I think I would like it if when you click the darker gray area(i dont know what else to call it) that the deviations minimize. I cold tolerate it then.
nuttyjigs Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
It's still a button for only became a window-thing when I opened dA on our school computer. Anyway, I don't find it distracting since I'm incredibly dense when it comes to ads and the like, but I can see why people find it distracting, and it has a long way to go with the results it brings up. Still, dA can improve it over time, and making it optional would definitely make a lot of people happy.
seniro Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I personally don't like it...the feature is so useless...I can find more relevant deviations through the search bar >__<
shlebby Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I liked it when it was just a button, but now it's all big and distracting.
Did people that aren't beta testers see it as a button, or did it just start?
LadyBelva Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I really don't like how the "more like this" window is big, it's too much distractive from the deviation that I'm seeing. I preferred a lot more when that was only the button to click to open the page with all the "more like this" deviations.
Shinigami343 Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
I like it pretty good so far. It's one of the few changes they've made that I truly like.

So I just clicked a Dante picture and got a load of other cool Dante pictures.

I don't care what anyone says this feature is amazing.
